Proven
Models
Our work is built on a range of proven, community-based models that have demonstrated real, measurable success over time. These approaches are designed to be practical, adaptable, and rooted in supporting individuals not only in meeting immediate needs, but in building long term stability and independence.
Backed by strong results and years of real world application, these models focus on equipping people with the skills, confidence, and support systems needed to create lasting change in their lives and communities.
By applying these tested approaches, we ensure that our efforts are not only meaningful, but also sustainable, scalable, and impactful helping us deliver solutions that truly work.
The Homeless Garden Project

The Homeless Garden Project, based in Santa Cruz, CA, is designed to be simple, practical, and impactful. It provides individuals experiencing homelessness with the tools, knowledge, and support needed to grow their own fresh, healthy food while building confidence, job skills, and a sense of community.
With a 98% success rate and over 33 years of experience, the program has a proven track record of creating lasting change. Each year, an average of 17 participants successfully relaunch, moving forward with greater independence and stability.

At the heart of the model is a structured, hands on approach that combines transitional employment, job training, and holistic support services. Participants work on an active organic farm and within a connected social enterprise, gaining real world experience while earning income in a supportive environment designed to help them re enter the workforce.

The program operates year round through a combination of farm work and workshop based production. During the growing season, participants engage in cultivating organic produce, flowers, and herbs, while off season work in the workshop and store ensures continued employment and skill development.

Beyond agriculture, participants gain a wide range of marketable and transferable skills including teamwork, responsibility, packaging, marketing, customer service, and business operations through the project’s value added enterprise and retail experience.

A key strength of the model is its strong support system and mentorship structure. Each participant is paired with staff who provide one on one guidance, goal setting, and regular check ins to help them overcome barriers and stay on track. This personalized support builds trust and empowers individuals to move toward long term stability.

Equally important is the emphasis on community integration. Volunteers, staff, and participants work side by side, sharing meals, experiences, and responsibilities. This creates an inclusive environment that breaks down stigma, builds relationships, and fosters a true sense of belonging.

The model also connects participants to something larger than themselves contributing to the local food system, supporting community members in need, and engaging with customers and partners. Through this, individuals not only gain skills, but also rediscover purpose, dignity, and hope.
